![]() ![]() Pride and prejudice are only two of the obstacles to be overcome before inevitably true love brings Lizzie and her dark knight nose to nose (we don't even see a kiss). ![]() This is a Georgian world in which social conventions present a veritable minefield for indiscretions or misunderstandings and in which a formal dance can be as intricate an occasion as international diplomacy. (With doubling 8 m, 11 w.) Jane Austens timeless tale of romantic love touched by pride and prejudice is brought to the stage in this adaptation conceived especially for schools and small theatres. Matthew MacFadyen is suitably brooding and gauche as Mr Darcy, but the cast list is enlivened with splendid British character actors, including Brenda Blethyn as Lizzie's irascible mother, Tom Hollander as a diminutive cleric seeking a wife, and Judi Dench as the formidable Lady Catherine, plus the Canadian Donald Sutherland (Lizzie's wise father). Pride and Prejudice Book By: Claudia Haas Play : 8385 Pages: 76 pgs Cast: 10 m, 16 w, many extras. Knightley's rise in the thespian firmament has been meteoric and this is her best performance to date in a role for which she is perfectly cast. ![]() ![]() At the heart of this triumph is the delightful 20 year old Keira Knightley as the assured and sharp Elizabeth Bennett, the second of five daughters looking to be married off by an anxious mother. The versatile camera-work, luscious countryside, grand settings, period costumes, and atmospheric music are evidence of a work on which much love has been lavished. First time director Joe Wright has worked with television playwright Deborah Moggach's script and a wonderful collection of mainly British actors to delight us. This quintessentially English film is utterly charming - a very traditional interpretation of Jane Austen's 1813 novel that manages to entertain, amuse and even move. ![]()

![]() ![]() Since the 13th book was meant to be the finale, there are no loose ends or questions - though there were a couple of didn't-see-that-coming twists, one full-blown M. This final book winds up the arc concerning the prophecies involving Charley and Reyes - and keeps the possibilities open for a future series featuring their daughter and her prophesied battle against Lucifer. And I genuinely became attached to the wacky cast of characters that surrounded Charley. ![]() ![]() As the series progressed, I still read them for the mysteries and I enjoyed the humor more because it became more balanced, but I also got stuck into the mythology Jones was using for the overall series arc. When I read the first book, I liked it for the mysteries and the humor, though the humor was a little over-played (her penchant for naming everything grated on my nerves, and though she never stops doing it, it plays a much smaller part in the narratives of future books). The last book in the series the one meant to wrap up all the loose ends, and it does so admirably. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() When Alice uncovers a more sinister–even dangerous–side to Nellie’s marriage, and has become increasingly dissatisfied with the mounting pressures in her own relationship, she begins to take control of her life and protect herself with a few secrets of her own. Right? Right? (I had forgotten about The Exorcist.) What kind of reader would I be if I never left my comfort zone? And come on, it was recommended to me by a Jesuit brother. ![]() What the hell, I thought (an unfortunate choice of wording, there). “I don’t like horror,” he said, “but I loved this.” ![]() So I would never have picked up London Falling, a novel about a small dysfunctional group of police battling forces beyond their ken on the streets of the big city (and written by Paul Cornell, who specialises in all kinds of things I know nothing about, like Doctor Who and Wolverine and, well, sci fi), except that a trusted friend recommended it. I have very good reasons not to read horror, and I’ve discussed them here on more than one occasion. But nothing about Toshack’s murder is normal. Furious, Quill pursues the investigation, co-opting intelligence analyst Lisa Ross and undercover cops Costain and Sefton. Then his prize suspect Rob Toshack is murdered in custody. Detective Inspector James Quill is about to complete the drugs bust of his career. ![]() ![]() ![]() It is brilliantly written, and believable. ![]() The war scenes, letters, horrible contradictions, tolarence and cover up of murders within the military are just a handful of what this novel contains. All the tragedies of war, bigotry, the changes that began in the US that lead eventually lead to the abolition of segregation, rights to vote, work, education, equal housing rights. Exquisitely written WW1 love stories narrated by Aphrodite and other Greek Gods who have their own need for love and in misplaced efforts to gain it, do stupid impetuous things (one would think god’s to be above the frailties of mortals), including adultery, forgiveness, understanding, blaming, and making deals that go against the fates. ![]() |
